The Vice Chancellor, Edo University Iyamho, Engr. Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor has called on the staff of the university to go beyond their comfort zone and contribute meaningfully to the development of the university, just as he promised to take care of the staff’s welfare very seriously.
The Vice Chancellor made the call during the training workshop organized by the university for staff on the use of CANVAS Learning Management Systems, LMS/ Academic Information Systems, AIS and Smart/Electronic Boards for effective teaching and learning delivery.
Prof. Aluyor said that Edo University Iyamho is continuously acquiring modern teaching and learning technology to deliver the highest possible quality education available anywhere in the world to the students.
The VC said that the university was the first in West Africa to have acquired the CANVAS Learning Management System (LMS) and now the Academic Information System (AIS).
He said the training of the staff became necessary on how to use these new modern facilities now available to them in the university and to be able to do this, the personnel need to be regularly trained to ensure that they are able to use the facilities effectively.
“Essentially, the training, which is a continuous exercise is to ensure that we can get the maximum benefits from these facilities that we have acquired for use in the university”, he emphasized.
According to him, “We already have a requirement that all our academic staff should be computer literate, but being computer literate is not enough to be able to use a smart board and other modern teaching and learning tools, hence the training, we do these trainings from time to time to maximize the use of these facilities and get the benefits for the students”.
He however reiterated his commitment in providing the necessary and best legacies for both the staff, students and the university at large as a World class university.
Also speaking at the training, the Chairman of Edo University Iyamho Learning Management Committee, Dr. Akinyola Olayinka, said that the CANVAS LMS/AIS is beneficial to both the staff, students and the university at large in the modern day teaching and learning environment.
Dr Akinyola whose lecture was titled: “Edo University Iyamho CANVAS LMS – overview and course set, explained that the CANVAS LMS is a learning Management system that makes learning possible”, pointed out that It’s an online platform, which creates an interaction between the students and teachers.
On his part, Dr. Wilson Nwankwo, an associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Edo University Iyamho said that the Academic Information System (AIS) is an integrated system, providing computerized learning platform for both the lecturers and the students of higher learning.
He said that the AIS provides an integrated platform to enable students perform all academic activities such as course registration, checking of continuous assessment, results, transcripts etc, unlike the traditional system where students used to carry forms, papers and others from one office to another searching for course lecturers.
According to him, AIS also provides a single window through which each of the students can do their course registration, have their courses reviewed by their course advisers, approved as well as enrolled those courses to the Learning Management System.
He said that Edo University Iyamho has achieved another step in the right direction as the AIS is integrated into the CANVAS LMS to provide holistic teaching and learning platform for the university, which really means that the university is a world class university.
