The Vice Chancellor, VC, of Edo University Iyamho, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor has admonished the new students of the University on the importance of goal setting and how to put mechanics in place to achieve them.
The Vice Chancellor who was speaking at the orientation programme for new students for the 2019/ 2020 academic year, highlighted some factors that inhibit the ability of young people from achieving set goals in life.
He pointed out that more than any other reason, the fear of failure has discouraged more persons from setting goals for themselves. “The logic being that their inability to achieve earlier goals is the main reason they desist from attempting to engage in the business of setting new ones”.
According to the VC, “the negative response to goal setting could vary, depending on occasions, from mockery to misunderstanding and from despise to delusion. However, ignorance of the principles and practices of setting targets is a major reason why some of us detest it.”
While pointing out the inevitability of goal setting to success in life, Prof. Aluyor used the opportunity of the orientation programme to set new goals for the students. He encouraged them to work towards their various goals which are achievable so that they can lift up the university to join the likes of the University of Benin that prides itself as Unibest.
The VC noted that despite the fact that the school is young it is already ranked above other old institutions in the country.
On his part Prof. Monday Omodia, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in a lecture titled “Taking Pride in Your Contribution to our Future: Town and Gown, pointed out that the University has a culture and services of a world class quality of teaching, learning and modeling student’s attitude with environmental factors of community service.
In a paper titled “Know your University” the Registrar of the university, Dr. (Mrs) Isoken Ogboro gave a brief history of the ivory tower and the available channels of communication. She educated the students that a university is an institution of higher education and research which awards academic degrees in various academic disciplines.
The Registrar informed the students that “Edo University Iyamho was established by the Edo University Uzairue law (2014) and subsequently amended to Edo University Iyamho, Uzairue, (amendment law 2015). It was further amended as Edo University Iyamho (amendment law 2016). The University was accorded recognition and issued license by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on 23rd March, 2016, as the 41st state -owned University and 142nd University in Nigeria.
“Edo University Iyamho is wholly owned by Edo State Government, and the Visitor is the Governor of Edo State. The motto of the University is Quality education for development. The University colours are blue, lemon green and white. The blue represents harmonizing industry and technology. Lemon green represent agriculture the main occupation of the people of Edo state, while the white represent peace which is the hallmark of Edo people”.
Dr. Ogboro urged the students to channel their communication through the university management, Deans, Heads of Department and other officers of the university.
While presenting a paper titled “Coexistence of Religions”, the Catholic Bishop of Auchi Diocese, Rev. Dr. Gabriel Dunian. he admonished the students to practice their different religions in the campus and live together in peace and unity.
On his part, Apostle Johnson Suleiman dwelt on the effects of moral uprightness on students’ academic performance.
Assuring the new students of their safety on campus, the officer in charge of internal security, Mr. Maliki Theophilus, pointed out that security of life and property is always a top priority of the university management agenda which is to actualize a safe and secured campus environment with adequate measures such as uniformed security personnel, students’ gate pass, installation of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) across campus, patrol and escort services, radio system security communication, the ban of motorbikes on campus, compulsory residency for students and collaboration with security agencies as well as community securities.
