Global Afrobeat star, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, best known as Burna Boy has become the first Afrobeat singer to top UK Official Album chart with ‘I Told Them’.
This was disclosed by UK’s Official Charts Company on Friday, September 1, noting that Burna Boy secured a number one album in Britain with “I Told Them…”.
In 2022 he was close to earning the accolade with his hit album, “Love, Damini”, which climbed to second in the UK album rankings.
Reacting to his success, the Chief Executive of the official Charts Company, Martin Talbot, paid tribute to Burna Boy.
He said, “British music fans have always been renowned for their love of new music and embracing cultures from around the world, and the explosion of interest in Afrobeats’ musical culture over the past decade has been a concrete example of this.”
Burna Boy is the first foreign artist to have successfully made it to the top list as homegrown British talents, such as J Hus, have enjoyed the chart-topping for years.
This feat marks the continued rise of the Afrobeats genre in Britain and around the world, as artists like Wizkid and Davido also enjoy mainstream success.
