Global singer, Rema, has stated that his popular song ‘Calm Down’ helped create the new Afrobeats category in some international awards.
Rema said this during an interview on‘The Breakfast Club’, emphasizing that he stands alongside Afrobeats stars like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.
He said, “I don’t want to feel like an Afrobeats Messiah. Sometimes I can’t wait for the OGs to say it but since no one is saying it, I might have to say it myself.
“Respect to the OGs but yeah, I am one of the Big 4… Something as little as a major award shows creating an Afrobeats category because the success of my song has already opened gates.”
Recall that last year, the MTV Video Music Awards introduced a new category for Best Afrobeats Song. Rema’s ‘Calm Down Remix’ featuring Selena Gomez won the first award in this category.
