South African media personality, Kefilwe Mabote, has caused a stir online after sharing a video of herself burning her high-end designer clothing and accessories as a symbolic gesture of her newfound faith in Christ.
In the video, Mabote can be seen setting fire to the luxury items, a move she described as part of her commitment to leaving her past lifestyle behind and fully dedicating herself to her Christian faith.
While some praised her decision as a bold expression of her religious transformation, others criticized the act, suggesting that she could have donated the expensive items to those in need instead of destroying them.
The incident has sparked widespread debate, with many questioning the balance between personal convictions and societal responsibility when it comes to public displays of faith.
Addressing the backlash in a recent Instagram post, Mabote explained that her decision was deeply rooted in her faith and biblical teachings. “I’ve been getting questions about why I chose to burn Versace items instead of giving them away, and I want to take a moment to explain with care and understanding,” she wrote.
“The decision to burn the items came from a place of conviction. According to the Bible, such things are considered ‘accursed’ (see Joshua 7:13 for context). For example, the image of Medusa represents a Greek god, from the marine kingdom, and as believers, we cannot serve two masters. To give these items away would be to pass on something I no longer stand for, and I can’t in good conscience transfer things that I know carry deep spiritual implications.”
