US President, Joe Biden has signed a $1.2 trillion spending package to put an end the prospect of a government shutdown.
According to New York Times report, the President’s action came after the legislation passed a rushed series of congressional votes with bipartisan support and landed on his desk just after 2 a.m.
With the looming threat of a government shutdown if the measure failed to pass into law before midnight on Friday, tensions were palpable. However, as the Senate vote stretched beyond that critical deadline, the White House issued a statement.
It announced that federal officials at the Office of Management and Budget had “ceased shutdown preparations” anticipating the approval by the Senate and signing by President Biden.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the president said that the measure’s of approval was “good news for the American people.”
But he alluded to the months of drawn-out negotiations that preceded the last-minute approvals, saying that the agreement was “a compromise” adding that “neither side got everything it wanted.”
