The United States President Joe Biden has announced his withdrawal from the forthcoming presidential election.
This was disclosed in a letter shared on his official X handle on Sunday, July 21.
In the letter, Joe Biden said it had been the greatest honour of his life to serve as president.
This comes four months before Americans go to the polls, upending the race for the White House.
It follows weeks of intense pressure from fellow Democrats after a faltering debate performance against Republican Donald Trump at the end of June.
The letter reads, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve you as president.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
Biden said he would “speak to the nation later this week in more detail about my decision.”
