Republican Representative Andy Ogles has introduced a bill seeking to amend the US Constitution to allow President Donald Trump to run for a third term. The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, currently prohibits anyone from being elected president more than twice.
Ogles’ resolution aims to revise the amendment to read: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times…” He believes Trump “has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal”.
The lawmaker also praised Trump’s recent executive orders, including those on border control, energy production, and withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO). Ogles emphasized the need to support Trump, saying, “It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration”.
Interestingly, Trump had previously hinted at being open to a third term, jokingly saying, “I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something… Unless you say, ‘he’s so good, we have to just figure it out”.
The proposal has raised questions about the constitutionality of a third term. While the 22nd Amendment limits elected terms, some argue that a former president could potentially serve in a non-elected capacity, such as through the Presidential Succession Act.
The bill’s prospects are uncertain, but it has ignited a discussion about the limits of presidential power and the potential for constitutional changes.
