The Edo State branch of African Women Lawyers Association, AWLA has called for synergy among government and non-governmental organisations to get justice for late Uwaila Vera Omozuwa, the 100 level Microbiology student of the University of Benin who was raped and murdered at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG Ikpoba Hill Benin City recently.
In a press release signed by the Edo State chairperson of the association, Itohan Okungbowa Esq, the association condemned the rape and murder of Uwaila and appealed to security agents to fish out the perpetrators the heinous crime which they described as new wave of crime in the society.
“We call on the government and non-governmental organisations to theme up to fight this ugly menace which has gradually crept into our society and overtaking all of us as this is a fight that must be taken seriously by everyone as no one knows who will be their next victim.
“We thank the law enforcement agents for the steps they have taken so far, but we however call on all security agencies to double up efforts in apprehending all the suspects linked to this crime, as Justice delayed is Justice denied.”
While sympathising with the Omozuwa family on the gruesome murder of Uwaila, the statement noted that justice for Uwaila is justice for every woman and the girl child, and urged all hands to be on deck to ensure that the killers of Uwaila are brought to justice to deter potential rapists and murderers no matter their status in the society.
“Justice for Uwa is Justice for every female/ girl child, parent and the society and therefore should be achieved and the perpetrators no matter how influential or however rich in the society must be brought to book to serve as deterrent to others.
We sympathise with the family of Omozuwa on the painful demise of their dear daughter Uwa. AWLA stands with you in this time of grief and will ensure that justice is served hot in this case. Though Justice cannot bring back Uwaila but it will definitely help her soul to rest knowing that the perpetrators can no longer hurt another life.”
