The House of Representatives has urged the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to halt the implementation of the proposed new electricity tariff.
This call comes amidst growing concerns over the potential impact of the tariff on consumers.
Recall that NERC commission had approved the increase of electricity tariff, stating that the increment would take effect immediately.
The vice chairman of NERC, Musiliu Iseni, said, “The commission has approved a rate review of 225 naira per kilowatt hour from a maximum of 68 naira per kilowatt hour … for just under 15% of the customer population in the Nigerian electricity supply industry,” Oseni said.
Following the reactions from consumers, a lower legislative chamber during its plenary session on Tuesday, April 30, approved the halting of the resolution.
The proposal was put forth by Nkemkanma Kama, a legislator representing the Labour Party (LP) from Ebonyi state.
