Following the boat mishap at Marina Resort, Calabar, the Governor of Cross River state, Bassey Otu, has ordered the immediate suspension of all boat operations as well as all other activities in the resort.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Emmanuel Ogbeche on Sunday, 25th June.
Recall, Summit Nigeria had earlier reported that, the boat incident involved 13 members of the Nigerian Medical Students’ Association, NiMSA, who went on a boat cruise in Marina Resort, Calabar, 10 out of the 13 students tourist were rescued by the Nigerian Navy whose patrol team was nearby while three are still missing.
The statement reads, “That all cruise boat operations and other activities at the Marina Resort be suspended immediately until further notice.
“That the cruise boat operators with the management of the State Tourism Bureau are directed to attend a meeting in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government on Tuesday, June 27th, 2023 by 12pm.
“Besides the cruise boat operations, the State Ministry of Transport is to immediately cross-check the safety standards and conditions of all boats operating in the Calabar waterways.
“The police should speed up the investigation into the boat accident and prosecute those found culpable to serve as a deterrent to others.
“We sympathise with the families of the affected students over the unfortunate incident,” the statement added.
