Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after serving her prison sentence in the United Kingdom. According to reports, she arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
Mrs. Ekweremadu was sentenced to four years and six months in prison by a UK court in May 2023 for her involvement in an organ trafficking plot. Her husband, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, received a nine-year and eight-month sentence, while their associate, Dr. Obinna Obeta, was sentenced to ten years.
The convictions marked the first time defendants were found guilty under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act for an organ harvesting conspiracy. The court found that the Ekweremadus and Dr. Obeta conspired to bring a 21-year-old man from Lagos to London with the intention of harvesting his kidney for the couple’s ailing daughter.
Mrs. Ekweremadu’s return to Nigeria concludes her legal ordeal in the UK. There is no official statement yet from the Ekweremadu family regarding her return or the current status of Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s imprisonment.
