Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, on Thursday, May 9, 2019 congratulated Mrs Funke Egbemode on her re-election as the President of the Nigeria Guild of Editors during the guild’s 13th annual conference in Lagos.
Okowa, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, in Asaba also congratulated Vanguard Newspapers Editor, Mr. Eze Anaba and other members of the newly-elected executive council of the NGE.
He noted that Egbemode had not only exceeded expectations since she took over the helm of the NGE, but had also taken the guild to greater heights.
Okowa said, “I have never doubted your ability to effectively lead the guild to the enviable heights you have taken it to, and i must thank your colleagues for rewarding your excellent performance in the last two years by unanimously returning you and some of your executive members unopposed.
The Governor also called on the NGE “to join hands with other relevant stakeholders to ensure editorial independence and objectivity of the press at all times”
He described Egbemode as a role model who has proved her mettle in the profession, adding that her recent re-election was well-deserving and an inspiration to other women striving to make a name in the profession.
“As Nigeria continues to grapple with the challenges of insecurity and under development, it is therefore a challenge on the NGE, to ensure that editors continue to set agenda for good governance and development of the country through their editorial comments and feature writings,”
Okowa further said with the astute support of her colleagues in the guild, he has no doubt that Mrs Egbemode will bring her wealth of experience to bear, not only in advancing the course of the guild, but also the journalism profession in general.
