The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved a tariff adjustment of up to 50% for telecommunications operators, citing the need to address growing operational costs in the industry.
The decision, announced on January 20, 2025, is significantly lower than the over 100% increase requested by some network operators.
In a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs, the NCC explained that this adjustment was necessary to sustain the telecommunications sector while ensuring service delivery to consumers is not compromised.
“The approved adjustment is aimed at addressing the significant gap between operational costs and current tariffs while ensuring that the delivery of services to consumers is not compromised,” the Commission stated.
The tariff adjustment, which adheres to the 2013 NCC Cost Study and the 2024 NCC Guidance on Tariff Simplification, marks the first review since 2013. The NCC noted that despite increasing costs, tariffs had remained static for over a decade, placing significant strain on operators.
The Commission emphasized that the adjustments would remain within regulated limits and were carefully determined to balance consumer protection and industry sustainability.
“Operators are required to implement these adjustments transparently and in a manner that is fair to consumers. They are also mandated to educate and inform the public about the new rates while demonstrating measurable improvements in service delivery,” the NCC added.
The NCC further highlighted the potential benefits of the adjustment, including improved network quality, enhanced customer service, and broader coverage. “This adjustment will support the ability of operators to continue investing in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity,” the statement read.
To reassure Nigerians, the Commission revealed that extensive consultations with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors were conducted before the approval.
The NCC reiterated its commitment to fostering a resilient and inclusive telecommunications sector, supporting indigenous vendors, and promoting the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.
