Details have emerged of how drunk Policemen allegedly killed two men in the early hours of Tuesday January 1, 2019, during new year celebration in Edo state.
The incident reportedly happened at the popular Ring Road, Kings square, Benin city.
According to an eyewitness report, the drunk policemen were also trying to celebrate by firing gunshots into the air at their station opposite the Oba market, but instead opened fire on the duo.
One of the victims reportedly died immediately on the spot while the other lost his life moments later as he was not able to get appropriate first aid to keep him alive.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called on the Edo State Commissioner of Police to investigate the shooting incident at Ring Road.
In a statement, the Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy to the governor, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said “the governor has asked the Police CP to thoroughly investigate the incident and assured that anyone found culpable will be brought to book.”
Osagie further said that “the governor is disturbed by the incident and wants a clear report on what actually transpired and the condition under which the reported shooting took place.”
He noted that the Obaseki-led administration has prioritised the security of life and property with the huge investment in the state’s security architecture and trust fund, launched recently, and would stop at nothing to get to the root of the Ring Road shooting incident.
