The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who was arrested in the early hours of Monday, September 9.
According to NIGERIAN TRIBUNE report, the Yellow House of the nation’s secret Police and labour indicated that Ajaero was released on bail about after 11:00 pm, after he wrote a statement.
Credible labour sources said that Ajaero’s release followed a threat by the NLC to mobilise its affiliate unions for a nationwide showdown with the federal government if Ajaero was not released by midnight on Tuesday, September 10.
Recall that SUMMIT NIGERIA had reported that Ajaero was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday on his way to the United Kingdom for a global Trade Union Congress (TUC) meeting for undisclosed reasons.
Following his arrest, NLC in a statement had threatened to go on strike and had placed its affiliate bodies on alert if the service failed to release Ajaero.
NLC had in a statement issued by Benson Upah, its spokesperson said,: “The congress will not stand idly by while the rights of its leaders and members are trampled upon.
“Accordingly, we demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Ajaero.”
As at the time of this report, the Secret Police are yet to issue any statement over the arrest and detention of the Labour Leader.
