A tragic accident has claimed the life of a female prospective corps member who was on her way to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The deceased, whose name has not been disclosed, was among 12 prospective corps members travelling in a 14-seater bus that crashed into a parked truck. The accident occurred when the bus lost control and rammed into the truck, resulting in the death of the female corps member and injuring several others.
According to VANGUARD report, eyewitnesses said the corps members had boarded the bus in Enugu and were heading to the NYSC orientation camp for their three-week orientation course. They are believed to be part of the 2024 Batch C Stream II set of corps members.
The victims were rescued by residents and security agencies and rushed to the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) for treatment.
Ebonyi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Igwe Henry, confirmed the accident, stating, “At the time our men from Amasiri Unit Command got the information and got to the scene, the victims had been rescued.” He, however, said he had no details of casualties as the victims were rescued before his officers arrived at the scene.
The Ebonyi State Coordinator of NYSC, Foluke Oladeinde, expressed her shock and grief over the incident, saying, “I am not in the right frame of mind to talk now. I am in the hospital now. Yes, the accident occurred, but I can’t talk right now.”
