Statistics have shown that road accidents account for a larger share of injuries and death in Nigeria and majority of these road crashes are attributed to human factors which relate to driver’s error, over speeding and level of experience.
The commander, RS.13, Iruekpen Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC, Fidellia Obasi gave this revelation over the weekend at a one day safety and awareness campaign initiated by Champion Chambers Empowerment in collaboration with FRSC and hosted by Special Marshalls Unit 32 in Esan Central Local Government Council Area of Edo state.
She said most drivers are inexperienced as they lack the requisite knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.
The FRSC boss said it was a big surprise to the Corps that a non governmental organization deemed it necessary to preach the gospel of safety in order to help reduce crashes on our roads, especially the Ewu hill axis of Benin-Auchi road.
While expressing the command’s gratitude to the President of Champion Chambers Empowerment, Pastor Ben Okhai for the kind gesture, Obasi encouraged motorists to always obey all traffic laws in order to reduce crashes on the high ways.
In his remarks, to the initiator of the programme, Pastor Ben Okhai, President, Champion Chambers Empowerment, an indigene of Ewu Community said the decision to organize the event was reached after critically reviewing the number of accidents that have claimed lives in the Ewu hill axis of the Benin-Abuja road corridor.
The clergy pointed out that what he is presently doing is in line with the vision of his organization to touch lives and help the society to grow. According him, “My NGO is taking a lead in humanitarian service delivery and safety awareness campaign”.
While calling on other government agencies, non- governmental organizations and well meaning Nigerians to join hands with his organization to reduce the frequent occurrence of accidents in Ewu hill axis, he appealed for the erection of safety signs and deployment of Corps officers to the axis to stem the spate of accident before the completion of the road.
Other stakeholders who spoke at the event also attributed the slow pace of work in the construction of the second lane of the road as one of the causes of frequent accidents in the Ewu axis and called on the federal government to prevail on the construction company to ensure quick completion of the road.
