The Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District, Senator Clifford Ordia has said that Senators will continue to protect the Nigerian people by ensuring that the constitution is obeyed at all times assuring that they owe their constituents and Nigerians the duty to defend and entrench democracy.
Senator Ordia stated this in a statement Sunday, condemning last Friday’s attack on the Senate Committee chairman on Public Accounts, Senator Matthew Urhoghide at the Benin Airport allegedly by APC youths for moving impeachment motion against President Muhammedu Buhari for expending $496 Million for the purchase of twelve Tucano fighter jets without appropriation by the National Assembly.
Senator Ordia who described the attack as executive recklessness noted that the nation is being governed by people who don’t have the interest of our collective progress at heart.
“Let me state categorically that as Senators, we sworn to protect our grand norm. We can never relent or be cowed and intimidated from discharging our constitutional responsibilities. We owe our constituents and Nigerians the duty to defend and entrench our democracy by speaking out against any violation of our constitution”
“The Executive recklessness exhibited at the Benin Airport against the distinguished Senator Matthew Urhoghide is a clear indication that we are been governed by people who don’t have the interest of our collective progress at heart.
“The well orchestrated and programmed dastardly act whose aim was to humiliate an illustrious Benin man, a thoroughbred, fine gentleman and performing Senator who is presently Chairman, Senate Committee on Public Accounts at the National Assembly is totally unacceptable and condemnable.
” Governor Obaseki who witnessed the deleterious shameful act as it was executed against Senator Urhoghide did nothing,” the Senator said.
While commending Senator Urhoghide for his legislative activism, Ordia condemned the appropriation of $496 Million by President Buhari without approval of the National Assembly.
“The Senator has contributed so much projecting our rich Edo heritage.
“The act displayed by President Muhammadu Buhari, to appropriate $496m without the approval of the National Assembly which is an impeachable offence is a flagrant abuse of Executive powers which must be outrightly denounced and therefore commend Senator Matthew Urhoghide for moving the motion.”
Senator Ordia, called on the Police and other relevant security agencies to eschew all forms of complacency and as a matter of urgency swing into action and ensure those who attacked Senator Matthew Urhoghide and a former PDP state woman leader, Mrs. Stella Evbomwan are arrested and prosecuted immediately.
