President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has emerged as the new Chairman of Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.
The president was elected as the chairman at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the regional bloc held on Sunday, in Bissau, capital of Guinea-Bissau.
After the document handover by his predecessor, Umaro Embaló, the president pledged to take “democracy seriously” adding that, “Democracy is very tough but it is the form of government”.
ECOWAS Chairmanship position is specifically held by one of the heads of state or government of the member countries, chosen on a rotating basis for a one-year tenure.
The Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari occupied the position from 2018 to 2019.
